Adult Learning Typology

Authors:Karen MyersNatalie ConteKjell Rubenson

This Typology report is one in a series of papers that have informed the development of an analytical framework for the Adult Learning and Returns to Training Project. This larger project is a three-year multi-disciplinary and collaborative effort to further the knowledge base of conceptual, analytical and methodological issues concerning the scope and measurement of adult learning activities and their associated financial and non-financial returns to individuals, firms and society at large.

The Typology Report presents a proposed typology for classifying adult learning activities.

The Typology Report has three broad objectives: First, to propose a working definition of an adult learner and adult learning. Second, to present a proposed approach to classifying adult learning activities which is informed by how various types of adult learning are designed and delivered in practice. Third, to identify and describe adult learning activities in terms of a set of key dimensions such as provider, payer, purpose, duration, design and delivery.
